I wasn't born until after the war but I did get a sense of it when I was an extra in the film Yanks. Wearing the clothes of the period and being surrounded by everyone else doing the same really gave me a feeling of stepping back in time. The first scene we were in was waving the troops off at the station. One of the stars was called Wendy Morgan, a Londoner, and I remember she had a ticket machine she couldn't handle. Another extra got rather irate because of the way she was using the machine so he stormed over and demonstrated the proper way to use it. He had apparently been a conductor on the Number Ten tram into Manchester. From then on she was more authentic in her use of the maachine.
