When the war started Ron was only 14 years old. When Ron was at school he thought it was going to be fun fighting in the war and then he joined the Air force at 18 years of age and found it wasn't so much fun. Ron was an engine mechanic with a bomber squadron flying Lancasters.
Before he joined the Air Force his brother George was in the Army and served in Africa and Italy. Ron was very lucky when he was fighting that he didn't get injured. They found they were quite well fed, bearing in mind the civilians were rationed. Ron's service was all in the UK while others like his brother spent years overseas, some as prisoners. Ron got to visit home quite a lot while he was in the Air Force, although at certain times all leave was cancelled. At first Ron got three shillings a day (15p) rising finally to six shillings (30p)by the time the war in Europe was over. Ron was then transferred into the Fleet Air Arm until the end or the war in the Far East.
When Ron came home, aged 21, after three and a half years of fighting he went back to his old job in a stockbroker's office. It felt good but strange coming home from the Air Force. He felt strange coming home because he wasn't getting orders shouted at him all the time. It took a while for him to get over the war,as it did for everyone else. When the war had ended there were lots of street parties to celebrate and everyone was happy.
