This story was submitted to the peoples war site by a volunteer from CSV Media on behalf of Audrey Makepeace and has been added to the site with her permission. She fully understands the sutes terms and conditions.
I worked in the Co-op at Leadgate throughout the War. Some people used to try and alter their ration books but it didn't work, everyone got the same. I remember, there was myself, another married woman and young lad working there. We used to get the rations delivered for the week and have to dish them out to everyone. There was always a little left over and we all wished that we could take it home and have a little extra.
