My father was in a reserved occupation making thermometers at GH Zeal Ltd, Merton. He made my mother evacuate to Cornwall with me when she was expecting her 2nd child.
We went to a place near Redruth. The cottage where we stayed was quite primitive, only a cold water tap and NO bathroom.
When my mother went in to labour the other evacuees sharing the cottage called the ambulance to take her to hospital, whilst they took care of me.
Unfortunately the nearest maternity hospital had no beds available. My mother then had to go on a journey around Cornwall in the blackout until a bed was found!! She gave birth to my sister half an hour after arriving.
A little while after this my mother insisted that we all return home to the Morden area, even though a few bombs were still falling in this area.
