I was off duty, and on the fourth floor of the nurses' home, which was on a hill, so it was easy to see a great deal of the riverside and London. I could not state the time of the air raid I am about to describe, but a November evening is probably correct.
The raid in progress was way over on the other side of the Thames and it really justified the title of my story. There were searchlights weaving to and fro, tracer bullets, flares, the varying colours of the fires, depending on what was burning. When a burst of small flames from a molotov cocktail exploded, they were a bluish, turquoise colour. Then the thought of the awful results this incident was causing came, the anger and sheer helplessness that there was absolutely nothing we civilians could do to halt the carnage.
