My school teacher in Jamaica had a daughter who was studying to be a doctor in England. One day in school my teacher told us that her daughter had been called up for the war effort to drive ambulances but sadly she was killed in 1941. An English lady used to come and visit the school to tell us about different countries but she stopped coming when the war broke out and we missed her visits.
We ran short of everything, especially things that were imported like gasoline and certain foodstuffs and all the prices went up. We had blackouts too. Things were hard.
It was during the war that I first saw a plane as they started flying over the island regularly.
my brother-in-law, Herbert Johnson, was in the army in Jamaica and was sent o England in 1943.
