A near miss on the way to the Cinema
My husband and I, aged about 20, were walking along Toot Hill Road, to the station, to get the train to Epping. We heard the air raid siren and went into a nearby shelter. The planes were going over to bomb London. After the all clear sounded, we went on to the cinema.
On our return journey home, we passed the shelter we鈥檇 sheltered in and it was razed to the ground, having had a direct hit. I thought 鈥淭hank God we weren鈥檛 in it鈥.
Shortly after this my husband was called up and he went into the Marines. He went to Sicily and Durban. After being wounded he became a Royal Marines Policeman.
