Edith was one of a group of 16 evacuees that was brought to an old derelict cottage which was very small. This old white-washed cottage was in the Melough area near Carryduff. Living conditions were very bad as this building was very damp and cold.

As Carryduff is higher than Belfast above sea-level, she can remember the noise of the German planes flying overhead.

Men used to dig holes around the cottage and empty the buckets from the dry toilets. When they replaced the soil, one of the young girls in the group would make daisy or dandelion chains and cover the soil.

Edith's sister was sent as an evacuee to a house near Ballymena. The food was good but the lady did not dry clothes well enough and as a result her sister was in hospital for 4 years.
