My first memory was of eating the neighbours cheese ration. I was about 18 months old at the time and in my pram when she dropped the cheese onto the pram. I just ate it!
I can remember a bomb falling in next door鈥檚 garden. It failed to explode and we had to evacuate the house, leaving breakfast on the table, which I believe was beans on toast. When we returned to the house after two years the food was still there, but very mouldy!
We were evacuated to the Forest of Dean area and I remember seeing all the tanks and jeeps driving down the road, ready for the invasion.
My mother made friends with an American soldier called Chuck Jackson and I can remember him, and his wife Mildred, sending us parcels of goodies, food and clothes. This went on into the 1950鈥檚.
My sister, Christine, was born during an air raid and was put under the dresser in a Moses type basket for safety.
