In 1940 an air-raid on Croydon took place. We lived in Chatsfield Road. The air raid warning sounded in the evening and my parents and I 9Alan) made our way to our Anderson shelter in the garden. My brother Ernie stayed in bed in the upstairs bedroom and refused to take shelter. A bomb fell destroying houses nearby and the blast from the bombs knocked out all our windows and blew down the front door. My brother then got out of bed, walked over the front door with glass everywhere and amazingly didn鈥檛 cut his bare feet. His spectacles were in a case and they were reduced to powder by the blast, with just the rims remaining. Damage was so severe that we moved to another part of Croydon. This house was near to the airport which was potentially more dangerous! However we all survived.
