My parents, Raymond and Margarie were newly married in 1940.It seems like many of their friends , they worked on essential war work , and were members of the ARP , and in Raymonds case he was in the Home Guard ; but they were not called up .
One evening ,wanting to be alone, they avoided their local pub where friends and colleagues gathered, & went instead to the Squirrells Head, which happened to have had the roof blown off in a recent air raid .
Returning from the pub , having partaken of a drink or two , they fell in with one Mr Thompson . As they were crossing the road bridge over the local railway , Mr Thompson suddenly threw himself into the gutter, simultaneosly shouting " Racka bombs !
racka bombs! "
With a fearful extended whistling sound , a line of bombs then descended & exploded , straddling , but missing the bridge.
My parents stood supporting each other in helpless laughter, as the unfortunate Mr Thompson lay glaring up at them from his undignified position .
He was ever afterwards known to all as " Racka bombs Thompson "
