I was a schoolgirl during the war and my mother was told that German planes couldn't bomb Great Malvern, Worcestershire, because they'd be so busy climbing the hills to get over tops that they couldn't drop their bombs, or if they dropped them the other way, they would miss Malvern. Because of this, I was sent to Malvern Girls' College as a boarder to get me away from the bombs. That's how I got to boarding school! The story seemed to work as we didn't have any bombs while I was there and that was for 5 years. We had air raid warnings and the interesting thing is that also in Malvern there was HMS Drake which was the training centre for the Navy. There was also an enormous collection of Free French soldiers in one of the biggest hotels so there was an awful lot going on. We never met the soldiers as we weren't allowed to and it would have been very difficult to do so without being caught. We had a very distinctive maroon uniform and if the old ladies who lived in Malvern saw any of the college hats where they shouldn't have been, they used to report us straight to the headmistress. And if we took our hats off, of course there was the rest of the uniform, so we were reported again and that was even worse! The old ladies in Malvern were great guardians of all the schoolgirls, much to our disappointment. I used to go back home to South Wales for the holidays. It was fairly safe there although we did have bombs
