This story was submitted to the People's War Site by Margaret Walsh of The Royal Star and Garter Home on behalf of Adam Hope and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was evacuated to America in 1940, aged 4. I was in Princeton. I think my parents must have fixed it up. My father came to see me once while he was in the RAF.

I was brought back on an aircraft carrier, which was quite exciting. I didn't recognise my mother - I must have been 7 then. It was difficult slotting back into life in England.

After the war, my parents bought a farm near Axminster, and I spent a lot of my childhood there.
