From Mrs. Grace Newman:
One Sunday evening my friend and I, who worked with me over in Woolverstone in the land army were walking home along the riverside in Wherstead Road. We suddenly heard very loud bangs and crashes. We could see the flashes though the trees and the air raid sirens were wailing loudly. We couldn't see planes because of the trees in the way, but we still saw enough for us to know what was going on. We were forced to walk on because we were in the open. There was nowhere for us to shelter from the German bombs. We later found out that the Germans had targeted the church in the village of Chelmondiston and one person had died for certain, I am uncertain if any others died.
Soon after the bombings in Chelmondiston we were working in the fields close to where we were staying in Woolverstone. We spotted a Doodlebug passing overhead and we saw the flames coming out of the end. When the flames came out of the end it meant they were going to crash and explode. We lay on the ground praying that it would go past us, thankfully it did and it crashed a little while away and the only thing it killed was a rabbit. But it did blowout the windows of the house we were staying, but no one was in because we were all working in the fields."
