The nursing home were I was going to have my baby closed and all the mothers around Thornton Heath were transfered to Brighton. We had two bus loads from Winterbourne Road School, Thornton Heath. It must have been a conductor that perused us, suggesting who should go on top and inside. I was sent on top.
We eventually got to Brighton and were issued into a school with forms to sit on. That was it! I was there all day waiting for a billet. I didn't know where I was going to go. Eventually there were six of us left, and they comandeered the Grand Hotel in Brighton in the servants quarters. The warning went two days later and we all went into the basement of the hotel. Together with the guests - one I remember well, she had a fur coat on and said "I haven't a stitch on underneath!"
From there I went to Brighton Municipal hospital to have my baby - I was on my own. I had no time to miss my husband - I was busy giving birth! However, now the real problem started. My baby wouldn't feed and the sister called out to my "Mrs Stanners, if you don't feed your baby, you will lose her!" But of course I was having problems. They brought my baby to me and she began to feed, but suddenly I heard a mother call out "This isn't my baby, she won't feed!" And we realised we had been given the wrong babies.
