In 1940 when my baby John was one year old we had a close shave with a German airplane. I was very happy because I had managed to find, after a great deal of searching, a cake for John's first birthday. It was very hard to find a cake in the war because all these luxuries were in short supply. I was pushing John in his pram towards Lower Sydenham, when I heard the sound of a plane overhead. I looked up and saw a german plane swooping down towards us. I saw the sign and the pilot very clearly. A few seconds before it had just dropped a bomb on the playground of a nearby school. The plane's machine guns began to fire. I picked up John and run to a nearby house for shelter. I was shaken, but all I could do was to think about was loosing the cake!
