My father, Harry Norton, a Gibraltarian, was Assistant Colonial Secretary and the Private and Political Secretary to about 7 Governors of Gibraltar, including Lord Gort.
He told me that Lord Gort told him that whilst on the beach at Dunkirk supervising the evacuation he saw a group of men, who on seeing him approaching began doing something. As he got nearer he saw that they were cleaning their boots. They were Grenadier Guardsmen, as was Lord Gort, and they were determined, whatever else was happening to have clean boots by the time he reached them!
