John and Joan Powney (maiden name Walters)have just celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. They were married in 1944. Joan was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). On one occasion she was given a 'Sleeping out' pass. It should have been for Saturday and to be handed in on Sunday evening. However a mistake was made and it was made out to be handed in by 10 o'clock on Sunday morning. Joan and John caught an early train from Dorchester to Wool and then walked the 5 miles from Wool to Lulworth Army Camp to get there by 10 o'clock. They handed the pass in and then walked 5 miles back to Wool where they spent the day. At the end of the day Joan saw John onto the train to Dorchester and then walked the 5 miles back to Lulworth. In total she walked 15 miles that day so she could spend more hours with her John.
