I was a very young ATS staff driver stationed at Truro and I remember very well driving my Officer onto Bodmin Moor where there were hundreds of troops obviously preparing for action. Little did I realise at the time that this was preparation for D-day! I had a boyfriend who subsequently became my husband for 58 years and he was in the Royal Navy on HMS Birmingham at Plymouth. He used to come and visit me and when I had to go back to my billet at 11pm he used to sit on the park bench for a while then would set off to walk all the 14 miles to St Austell where he would get the 5am milk train to Plymouth and a days work on ship. Bearing in mind this was in complete darkness, no lights, no white lines in the road. I think it must have been a sign of great devotion. This was how people did their courting in those days! When he sailed for the Far East I was unhappy without him and my father wrote to the war office asking for me to be transferred nearer to home which was Sussex as I was only 18! Despite the fact there was a war on I was transferred to Chatham and in fact experienced Doodle Bugs and landmines!
