THE DAY OF THE AIR RAID
We were in our classroom listening to the Teacher when all of a sudden the door opened and the HEAD came in and said something to our teacher.
She said "All stand up! Take up your gas mask boxes and file out and follow me across the playground to the Shelters鈥
When we got outside we could hear the Siren sounding the alarm
The shelters were in two large mounds at the far side of the playground
We went down the steps and it was a bit dark with just one light on. There was a board running down the middle of the shelter over a trench filled with water. It was smelling a bit! We sat on wooden benches each side of the shelter. After a bit we could see each other in the gloom. Then the teacher said we would sing a song to keep us going as it might be a while until the 鈥淎ll Clear鈥 sounded.
After what seemed along time we were told to keep quiet to see if we could hear the All Clear.
Yes it was time to go back to or classroom. But when we got back it was time to go home. So it was quite an exciting day.
We never went in the shelters again
WHEN THE FENCES CAME DOWN
Our school had large iron fences all round the perimeter of the grounds. Also there was a fence across the Playground to separate the Girls from the Boys at play time.
One day when we came out of the classroom at dinner time we saw some men taking the fences down from out side the school. They were using gas cutting equipment to get the iron fence from the brick walls on which the fence was fixed.
When they had finished the outside fence they went and started on the dividing fence We boys were jumping up and down and cheering the men on .At long last there would be no division and we could chase the Girls whenever we liked!!
