Robert Laughlin of Ballyclare (who served with the 6th Airborne Division and was discharged with medals in 1949) was stationed in Jackson Fields Barracks on the Holywood Rd with the RUR (Royal Ulster Rifles)when Belfast was hit in April 1941.
He remembers it was a moonlit night.
In the morning they went in to the centre to survey the damage and found a huge unexploded bomb behind City Hall.
There, sitting right on top of it, was a little boy. Robert shouted for "the wee lad to come away." Thankfully he was quickly brought to safety.
Robert says schrapnel holes are still visible in the steel beams at the Shipyard..a reminder of a night when Belfast City saw terrible devastation.
