As a young child (12 yrs old) I remember seeing the Americans arrive in Dawley. They threw chewing gum to the children watching and cheering them as they marched past.
I used to play with evacuees sent to Dawley from Liverpool. They lived in "the big house" near Malinslee church.
I hated going to the air-raid shelter and having to wear my gas mask. One night, when the first siren sounded my Mother got us all out of bed to go to the shelter as we had been told to do but My Father made us all go back to bed again.
When the war ended we had a brilliant party in our street. We sat at long tables and had food we didn't usually have i.e. jelly, blamange and fish paste sandwiches. The atmosphere was fantastic, everyone was happy.
