I was born in London's East End in 1936. We lived in a typical rented two up/two down end of terrace. Born in 1894 my father was a first world war veteran and my mother born in 1900 was a typical strict but loving Victorian woman. We lived in London throughout the war including the Blitz - I was never evacuated.
We had bomb blast damage with the usual ruined ceilings and broken windows on more than one occasion. However, the one occasion that relly sticks in my memory occurred in the Autumn of 1944. We were having our evening meal when there was a huge explosion. A V2 had landed a few blocks away. After a few moments/minutes my mother opened the door to the front room. The windows had blown in despite the brown sticky paper crosses and there was dirt and soot all over the room. It was just one time too many for Mother. She looked at Father and said with deep feeling. "You know that Hitler's a wicked old cuss"
This might sound mild but to me, coming from my mother who was a very religious women and never swore nor said bad things about anyone, it brought home for the very first time that Hitler really was a terrible person. Not just the German leader but a really bad person into the bargain.
