I was 32 years old when the war began and was in the Territoral Army at the time.I went to see the recruiting sergeant and told him that I was a reservist and wanted to join the navy. Instead they put me in the army.
I was in the Sixth batallion, Northumberland, then with the Royal Artillery. When I first joined up I expected to go to Dunkirk, instead I went to the 11th training regiment in North Wales. At the start of Dunkirk alot of people were killed. I was fortunate that I was not sent there. After that I didn't see England again from 1941 - 1946. I had no leave for four and half years. In the end it broke my marriage up.
Any letters that I sent home to my family though were censored to ensure that they didn't get an idea of whereabouts I was posted. I served all over in Cape Town and then the desert in 1943. When the war ended I was in Italy. We flew back home in a Lancaster bomber, instead of a troop ship!
I did enjoy the company in the army and met many great friends, they were real friend and I kept in touch with them. I had alot of respect for those that were bombed in London.
I was awarded five medals for my service
