I had one brother and two sisters and they were evacuated to Cornwall from London where we lived. My mother didn’t want me to go as I was the youngest she didn’t want to part with me. I was six when the war broke out and we lived in Paddington. I can’t really remember my brother and sisters being away or them coming back and at the time it was never really talked about after they came home, although they did talk about the lady they were with in Cornwall.

I remember the sirens and the air raid shelters and I remember my mother telling my father off for standing outside the shelter watching the searchlights and the bombers — she used to tell him to come inside. I remember the neighbours had a Morrison shelter.

This story was entered on to the people's war website by Liz Goddard on behalf of JJ Still and she fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
