The army used to practice on a firing range on the hill behind Jevington.
They were supposed to make sure that no live ammunition was left lying around.
This day five young boys, the eldest being 13 years of age had gone out on the hills and the 13 year old found a mortar bomb, which he proceeded to unscrew the cap off.
This of course blew him to pieces and injured two of the others severely, who died later.
Fortunately one of the group was able to get back to the village and raise the alarm.
My father and the 13 year olds father went to see if they could find any of the others, they found two who were injured, but the eldest, the 13 year old, there was no sign of him.
My father left the 13 year olds father sitting on a tuft of grass. When my father came back after not being able to find the boy, he realised that only about a yard away from the man still sitting on the tuft of grass was the shoulder and upper arm of the 13 year old.
So he quickly took the man away, back home and left the army to do the rest.
