my name is robert ovens i was born on 28/04/1945 and i am writing about my parents contribution to the war effort.although they are no longer with us, i believe their contribution albeit small,is quite significant-especially to me and my family.
my father was a coal miner in the south wales valleys mines and an arp warden after work,he worked long hours, but always wondered why he was not called up for service. He was told that coal was needed to keep the navy afloat as it were, and I think he may have felt better for that explanation but was never totally convinced. He worked in the mines for 50 years.
my mother Helen, worked in the ordinance factory in glascoed, her job was loading torpedoes with cordite. This substance used to bring outlarge sores on her skin, however I am told she never ever complained, saying there were others doing far more than her.We are 8 in family and my mother was first in the queue when evacuees arrived from london. We had two children stay with us from the same family ,and when the war was over they would come and stay with us for months on end!
I know this is only a short story, and I wasn,t born until it was all over, but I am glad to have told it because I am sure there were hundreds if not thousands of families like mine who did exactly the same things, to me they are surely unsung heroes.
