I was 10 when the war broke out. No-one had a TV so on 3rd September 1939 everyone crowded into houses which had a wireless to hear Neville Chamberlain announce that Britain was at war with Germany. Every night for a week the air raid sirens sounded. All our parents had an Anderson shelter delivered and they had to dig a big hole in the garden and pump water out for the shelter to go in.
We were all given gas masks and babies were given a "mini-iron lung" type of gas mask.
On Gipton there was an anti-aircraft gun which used to make the houses shake when it was fired. I also remember an unexploded bomb being dropped on nearby Easterly Road.
