My great grandmother:
Mary Lenden was age.11 when war broke out.
She got evacuated with her brother and all the children From St. Patrick’s school. They all got on trains at lime street station, carrying their gas masks in boxes and pillow Cases for their clothes. They were all taken to school in Cristleton, Wales and were picked out to go to families to live with. My Nan stayed with a family named the O’ Connels. They had two children one boy named Eugene and a girl named Joan. Every night we could hear the planes going over to Liverpool drop bombs on the docks. My great grandad Jimmy was in the Navy he had 5 medals and travelled all over the world on a big ship called the Destroyer.
Many thanks to Miss Karen Richards and to John Keane from Liverpool's Central Library
