I can picture my 'old' gran who would have been sixty'ish at time, huddled over the radio set listening to the traiotr 'Lord Haw Haw' (William Joyce). All through his dreadful, treacherous broadcasts she would be swearing. Bloody traitor, bloody this, bloody that, bloody the other. Occasionally we would be shocked at hearing the awful word 'bastard',we were only children after all. Gran was a staunch Roman Catholic and even though her real home was in the East End of London she wasn't one to use 'bad' language and every time she came out with one of her imprecations she would quickly follow up with 'Dear Lord, forgive me and a quick Hail Mary'. I'm sure He did because she lived to the ripe old age of 80 years, living just off Burdett Road in Whitechapel.
