I remember when my husband Tom went to register our daughter Judith's birth in 1944. He went straight from the hospital, collected a ration book and promptly went to the shop and got her rations including sugar, bacon, one egg, 2 ounces of butter, 2 ounces of bacon!
I also remember that because I was a little bit anaemic I used to get some liver if it was available. Sausages were given from 'under the counter' for the favoured few!
