I was living in Bexhill in 1943, the house in Bending Crescent was opposite a shelter so when the sirens went off we all had to run to get over there in time. We were all frightened wondering if we would get there in time. My son John Robert was born in April 1943 and christened in May. On the day of the christening we got back from the church and put the pram at the top of the garden as it was a lovely day. We went back indoors to get dinner at about one o鈥檆lock and it was then that we heard the planes coming over. The sirens went off as the planes were directly overhead. We could hear the Ack Ack guns firing and rushed up to the garden. There was shrapnel everywhere and I saw burn marks on the pillow and the blanket of the pram, but to my relief the shrapnel on the pillow had missed my son鈥檚 head by inches. I picked him up and ran, my mother was shouting 鈥済et to the shelter, get to the shelter鈥. There was no time to stop and pick up anything else 鈥 not even a bottle for the baby.
