Cyril was my office manager at Ashfield District Council which is how I got to know him. He used to tell us of his wartime experiences.
Once, when he was laying telephone cables on active service he had got half way across a field, rolling out cable, when a soldier stood up from behind a wall and shouted to him: 'You're in the middle of a mine field!' Cyril stopped dead in his tracks and after a moment began to retrace his steps very, very carefully. He walked backwards so he could keep exactly to his footprints. He didn't dare turn around.
