This story was related by Mrs. Gillbanks to Denis Price of the 大象传媒 People`s War Team, the 大象传媒 open Centre, Hull.
My first introduction to evacuees was when I was at school in Scarborough. These children were in two groups, one from London`s East End and the other from Hull. I recall to my surprise that the London children, who didn`t settle well, wanted to return home in spite of the bombing and constantly complained about being bored and that we were boring too! Eventually they got their way and were able to return to London.
We also had girls from Hull Tranby Croft School with us. They stayed in individual homes in Scarborough but as Scarborough also suffered bombing they eventually moved away, I believe they went to the Lake District.
Another memory which has never left me was in seeing the red glow in the sky which my mother confirmed was Hull being attacked. She said, `Poor old Hull is getting it again!`
