Tuesday,8th.May,1945.
So fate decided that I would still be on
German soil, when the war in Europe formally
came to an end .I can still recall a poignant memory, when midnight struck ,how
for a short time ,there was a deep silence,
and then from a distance a bugle sounded
clearly the "CEASE FIRE". This was taken up
by other buglers around us ,until the last
faint notes faded in the air. The silence
which descended was suddenly broken by the
firing of all kinds of weapons into the air, which created terrific noise. It seemed
to be a last challenge to the Gods of War,
for them to retreat ,and allow Peace to be
ushered in. Fireworks and Music continued
throughout this momentous night. Some of the
entertainment I thought childish,but when a
young Private of another Regiment than my own asked me to loan him my three striped
jacket,so that he could participate in the
wild goings-on being organised in the
Sergeant's Mess, I agreed. He deserved some
fun! As a young boy of 18,he had been captured at St.Valery,in1940,and had been a
POW for almost five full years!!
Wednesday,9th.May,1945. Rose at 06.10
hours. Warned to be ready to move . Again
received a haversack ration. Truck from camp
at 09.00 hours. Reached airfield at RHEINE.
at 09.40 hours .Played cards at side of
runway - received NAFFI meal. Would we really fly homewards to-day, or again back
to the camp? More patience was required .
