I was in the RAF in the Signals Unit for Direction finding. It was October 1944 and I was in the 5322Q unit. I was billeted in Salisbury in preparation for going abroad from Dover. Our unit's job was direction finding.
We were due to cross but what I realise now was that Boulogne had not been completely cleared of mines on its beaches. So while they were clearing, they left about 20 units at Dover Castle.
It was completely quiet, we were just waiting for transport. When we got to the beach in Boulogne we were told to keep in between the white tapes because each side was mines.
First of all you'd be very scared, like with doodlebugs, but after a while you get blase. If it hits you, it hits you.
