I was in domestic service in melton when the war broke out.My home was at Blaxhall. On my 21st birthday, the first thing I had was my call up papers! I joined the Womens Land Army and went to work on a private farm hand milking cows. I started at 5.30am and after milking I fed cows and calfs and took the bull to the cows, then went on the milk round. I took 16 gallons on my bike every day! Then I did general farm work, then started milking about 3.00pm, and then, after tea, at harvest time would work until 10.00pm.
My boyfriend at the time went flying in the R.A.F.and in 1943 we got married. He phoned me on the Monday, the wedding was on the Thursday, and the farmer and his wife said as I had helped them, they would help me. I went to work on my wedding morning at 5.30am and was home by dinner time and got married at 3.00pm! I had three bridesmaids. I had my reception as he was due to go abroad. He had to get in touch with his Squadron, but that got put off. We had about 48 hours together on 4 seperate occasions. He went all over the place: Africa; Egypt; and finnished up in Italy. He came home and then after 21/2 years I got pregnant, so I had to give up the heavy lifting, and went to work as a Domestic at Campsea Ashe Hostel. I stayed there for 4 months so I could finnish my 4 years.
