My name is Evelyn Atkinson. I鈥檓 99 now, and I鈥檒l be 100 on February 14th.
My husband got called up, and I was left with a baby. He was only about ten weeks old when he got called up. I was living in Lancashire at the time, living near Burnley. And the baby was five when my husband came back (for good). He did used to come home now and again, though, so David, my son, did know him a little.
My husband was based in a little town in Scotland. He was all over Scotland, then he went to Holland to serve. I鈥檓 afraid my memories going a bit now!
He was in the RMC, the medical corps. He went over to Holland, but he saw active service in other places too. Terrible times, weren鈥檛 they?
Back at home, I was looking after the baby. That was hard, but it was hard for everybody, wasn鈥檛 it? Where we were living was a bit grim. Dark at night and all that, with the blackouts.
And I think that鈥檚 about all I can remember now.
