when i arrived at the barracks in hereford to start d r training there were hundreds of girls arriving daily to train as drivers but only one who wanted the pleasure of riding a motor cycle(me) the result was i got mixed up with the driver intake and was lost in the system for 2 days. however the sergeant in charge found me and that was it.Istarted six weeks instruction on how to ridea a motor byke and also how to fall off without hurting myself that lesson was a waste of time the technique never seemed to work in my case. by the tme I was a day into the course another 5 girls arrived I don't know where they had been.the first lesson was how to hold motor cycle without letting it fall over.then we were let loose on the parade ground. one girl went through the guard room but she forgot to open the door.she bowed out of the course after she left the first aid room and went off Iknow not where.we had a whole 6 weeks to get the hang of it all.we did convoy work map reading night riding maintenance ,and by the time Ifinished Icould ride the byke ok but all the other things I left to chance and hope.the lieutenant (male) instructor decided we were fit to be let out through the herefordshire country side and led the way to bromyard common he then proceededto demonstrate how to descend a steep hill by shutting off the engine and coasting down he showed us the trick once and then for some reason he picked me to go first. well Idid do my best but I revved up instead of cutting off and tore down the hill at a rate of knots through the bracken and ended up on my back with my leg caught in the exhaust and burning. the officer and the other girls were in fits of laughter and the officer said he had often heard of the flying scot but that was the first time he had seen it.well I kept going and made the grade along with only one other and in spite of all the trauma we still helped to win the war.
