2 young boys sitting on the doorstep of their rented house in Alresford.
What are all these tanks,bren-gun carriers, and lorries laden with troops doing racing past.
And who are these nice guys in strange uniforms giving out chewing gum to young kids.
At the time neither my brother, aged 3 and myself aged 4 realised the significance of what was happening. It would have been about May time in 1944 when this massive convoy of vehicles came roaring past our house in East Street, Alresford all heading southbound down towards the Coast. It was nearly as exciting as the fire engine going past with the firemen all hanging on to the sides and swinging on the bell for dear life.I do hope those generous guys who gave us their chewing gum that day were able to survive the terrible slaughter on Omaha beach that was so shortly to follow.
