This is a story my Mum, Betty Statham (ne Hall) told me. It is only a short story, but the day this took place must have rather frightening. It started out as a nice day trip to Blackpool, my Grandma and her family intent on having a good time. It was 1943, my Mum was ten years old. Grandma suggested a trip to the top of Blackpool tower, the only family member who would go with her was my Mum. So up they went, with a few other members of the public. They were enjoying the view when the air raid siren sounded, so everyone made their way to the lift to get down, but they were not allowed! The lift was not supposed to be used during an air raid, so Mum and Grandma had to stay at the top of Blackpool tower throughout the duration and were then allowed down when the all clear siren sounded. It must have been pretty scarey up there!
