Fed up with suffering the continual air raids my family moved to Essex. I worked in the city and got tired of trying to get from Essex to the City with the interruption in the rail service etc. I joined the ATs and got posted to Sidcup to serve in the Pay Corps. My boy friend whom I had known since I was at school was also in the Army in the search lights and we managed to meet from time to time. Eventually we decided to get married and arranged a wedding in Warley RC Church for the 18th January. I went home anticipating the wedding in the little church. I arrived at the rail station and worked the short half mile to my home. As i got nearer it was evident that there had been some bomb damage and when I got to the Church- no Church! A land mine had dropped the night before and destroyed the church totally. What now? The Parish priest came to my home shortly after my arrival and told me he had arranged for the wedding to takr place at Brentwood Cathedral. Very underdressed for this event - it was war time and no coupons - the wedding took place after a delay from the regristar who had had to alter his programme. My huband and I have been married now for 59 years - he is 96 years old - and we are still happy with three daughters despite the shaky start.
