John Topping

This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jackie Taylor of Bolton Revisited on behalf of John Topping and has been added to the site with his permission, he fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

John Topping, now aged 76 voluntarily joined the Merchant Navy in 1943, aged 16, as an apprentice. When he was 17 he joined the Royal Navy, serving with the deep sea rescue tugs, T124T, until his De-mob in 1946. He served three and half a years in the Middle East, Far East, and America and his role was that of Able Seaman. When the ship was not involved in combat he kept the equipment serviceable and cleaned the ship. John was awarded campaign medals during this period.

"On board the HM Rescue Tugs we went to the rescue of a merchant ship that had been attacked by torpedoes. I was ordered to go on board with two other men to secure the tow rope. However, as the fog closed we became stranded and were adrift on board for three days. The ship contained petrol so we were not allowed to light a fire. Therefore there was no form of heating or light. After three days our own ship HM rescue tug found us and they towed the ship to Northern Ireland.

On another occasion I was wounded in Northern Italy and whilst I was in hospital I met another man from Farnworth named Albert Alldred. I met him again 51 years later at the Farnworth Veterans Club", he has sadly passed away.

On leaving the forces John got married, had two boys and two girls and returned to his previous occupation as a miner. John is now the Chairman of the Farnworth Ex-Services Association.

John Topping doesn't say which Rescue Tug he was on! He and others may be interested to know that more than a 100 veterans of T124T the wartime Rescue tug service, are in touch with each other and hold regular reunions, as members of the Deep Sea Rescue Tug Association. We also produce a quarterly Newsletter, 'TOWROPE' which contains many intersting accounts, that would be of interest to readers of this website. For more information about the DSRTA contact me,Jim Radford at 72 Stillness Road, SE23 INF or E Mail j.radford@bigfoot.com
I am the Press Officer for DSRTA and probably the youngest D Day veteran, as I was a 15 year old galleyboy on the Empire Larch on June 6 1944, when we towed the first block ships into position to create the framework of the Mulberry harbour.

My father was on one of the tugs which towed the Mulberry harbour in the weeks after d-day. His name was Bernard Blondrage. He was 17 and a stoker/fireman. I think he was on either the "EmpirePiper"? "Assidious"? 0r "Nancy Moran",which was sunk in the Channel on 31stMay 1945(or 1946) by an American ship!!!

Anyone have any details of him or the ships??

Which rescue tug were you on Mr Topping? My father Harold Wilson served aboard H.M.R.T. "Destiny" from her commissioning in 1942 until early 1946.
