In the days of the War
When the women did talk
At their garden gates
There were guns in the park
Barrage balloons in the skies
Aircraft and bombs passing by
In the days of the war
When the men were at work
The children would play
At the end of the day
At the end of the school day
In the park in the street
In their gardens
Hopscotch spinning tops
Skipping and fivestones
Fascinating games together
For children to play
In the days of the War
When the men were at work
They were stationed
At their allotted tasks
At the office desk
Standing at the wheel
Sitting at the machine
Behind the shop counter
Earning their bread their pay
To take home at the end of the day
In the days of the War
When the family was at home
The fire would crackle
Alive with coals and wood
The radio was on for Children鈥檚 Hour
The children sat at the table
With their painting and jigsaws
The aroma of cakes and liver
Baking in the kitchen oven
A reminder that the evening meal
Was on its way
In the days of the War
When the women did talk
At their garden gates
There were guns in the park
Barrage balloons in the skies
Aircraft and bombs passing by
