I was four years old when I was evacuated to Wales from Liverpool. My father had fought in the Great War, and was now in the ARP. My mother came with me to Tal-Y-Bont (near Aberystwyth), and stayed for a few weeks before returning.
I lived in a big farmhouse, a Manor. Our School was for other evacuated children, mainly from Liverpool. On the farm we had gas lighting, and it was comfortable. I had a very happy childhood. My two brothers lived in a remote rural area, in very primitive conditions.
We spoke English at the Manor, though many of the local farmers had very limited English. The local children barely mixed with us, and called us 'townies'.
It was very distant from the War, though there was great excitement one day when a plane was shot down not far off. I went back briefly to Liverpool, but returned when the 41 Blitz began.
I now live in North Wales and feel very close to the country.
