Staffs County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.
I was in convalescence in Lichett in Dorset recovering from a war wound. We were in a large house owned by Lady Janet. Every day we all had to go on a nature walk around the estate. One day I told her I wasn't feeling well and asked if I could possibly miss her daily nature walk. (I was fed up of nature walks!) She told me I'd have to go in the kitchen and peel potatoes for the evening meal. I was peeling the potatoes and suddenly I heard a voice: "Spud bashing!" "Spud bashing!" I turned round and saw that it was Lady Janet's parrot called Wallace.
I said to him, "You keep going and you'll finish up with these potato peelings all over you!" Needless to say he carried on all afternoon so when I'd finished my potatoes I picked up the bucket with all the potato peelings in it and tipped it over Wallace in his gold cage!!
However, I was spotted and reported to Lady Janet. She accused me of trying to kill Wallace the parrot. I had to go to my room and eat alone. The next morning I was sent back to the military hospital - Lady Janet had said she didn't want any undesirable characters living in her house!!
