I remember walking to the edge of the city of London, Aldgate, and seeing the fire engines lined up, hosepipes galore, and being stopped and told the city was still in flames - water and smoke everywhere. I picked my way across hosepipes to where I thought my office might be but was stopped by a fireman and told that from then on it was flat and I could go no further. My feelings were desperation and I wondered how I could contact the office.

I found out afterwards that most of the Docklands had been bombed and bombs had even been dropped on coastal towns by German bombers on their way back. There was no water to put out the fire at that time and as soon as they put out one fire the incendiary bombs were firing up fresh buildings.
