Lots of girls had a tough life ATS, WAAF - they had to repair airplanes and they had to be prepared to do everything men did.

Most of my work was clerical. But when there was an incident, the girls turned out as well as the men.

I was working at BAC when a big unexpected raid happened. We ran for the shelters.

The planes were very active over Bristol. They would machine-gun workers going to work.

There was a funny side, too. You had to put your trousers over your pyjamas for speed, and had to get a tin hat on over rollers.

Heavy gun - Ack - on the other side of the wood - couldn't get much sleep.

We girls wrote to a group of Desert Rats in Egypt; they had no letters. Three years later we were married.
