My mother and my sister Francis and I lived in Adomar Road and spent many a night in the air raid shelter.
Due to the number of spiders and damp and my mother's religious beliefs, the winter nights were spent in the dining room under the table and we were protected by the family Bible being placed on top of the table.
We all survived, yet my best friend Eddie Edwards, who lived just 6 doors away was killed along with his mother and younger brother.
Part of the war was spent being evacuated. Unfortunately I was sent home because I cried for my mum and was caught bowling the warm memorial wreath down the hill as a hoop.!
After a clip around the ear and being sent to bed, i was sent home and re-evacuated to Southshields.
