We had seen the Spanish Civil War bombing on the newsreels so we knew what was coming.
The Air-Raid sirens seemed to go off everyday and when they happened at school I would go home and see if my parents were alive. I lived on Victoria Avenue in Redfield and some sticker bombs hit the houses two-down from mine, which saw people on my street being killed. Walking along Victoria Avenue we found a crater with a bomb inside of it that the bomb disposable unit defused. Walking past that road nowadays and I still see that crater.
During the blackout people would inform each other if any light was coming from the houses. At school in a reading lesson we heard a horrible drone that got louder and louder. We looked out and saw what looked like a swarm of bees heading directly toward us. The sirens began sounding but once the 200 German planes went past a marker in Knowle they changed direction and headed toward Filton. While I was relieved they were not coming toward me, I knew they would be hitting someone else. As my Mum said, 鈥淭hat is somebody鈥檚 poor son.鈥
